There is a version of Black Walnut, juglans nigra, that grows in Oregon's Willamette Valley, most of it is pretty unremarkable, but I had my pick of the most premium slab off a particular very large western black flitch, and I'm quite happy with the resulting sets. Strong, little bit broken figure, and really rich unique purple browns going on. This is from the particular complexion of the soils in the region. Also, black walnut has a smaller pore pattern than claro, making for slightly more dense material, generally speaking. Western black of this quality is very rare, and this is the best I've ever come across.
