Some years ago I had a run of pink maple tube quilt that all came from a bigleaf maple that was standing dead on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge and was later laying dead in some dude's barn for a lot of years before it got sawn into lumber. Maple turns all kinds of colors besides blonde when its left dead in log form and can also spalt. This is due to microbes in the wood that can't survive in dead material and impart the wood with impossible hues at the time of their passing. So those sets were long gone when I stumbled upon one last remaining slab from that log at the same mill where I had originally found the rest. So these are kind of a blast from the past, the last of the last.
